Girls basket tryout

Herndon High School Basketball Tryouts

Prospective Student/Athlete and Family,

I would like to personally thank you for your interest in competing for the Herndon Girls Basketball Program.  In this letter I hope to address some questions you may have about tryouts. Below is the schedule for the 2017 Herndon Girls Basketball Try Outs. Unless a coach from the Herndon HS staff has told you otherwise, all 9th Graders will try out for Freshman, all 10th Graders will try out for JV and all 11th and 12th Graders will try out for Varsity unless told otherwise.

For those student/athletes who are still participating in a Fall Sport, your three day tryout period begins when your fall sport season concludes.  All that we ask is that you inform the coaching staff that you plan on trying out by November 6th, so we can make the necessary arrangements/adjustments.

You will not be allowed to tryout unless you have submitted by November 6, 2017:

Tryout Format

Players will be evaluated in all aspects of the game of basketball.  Varsity tryouts will be set-up like an in season practice.  Freshman and Junior Varsity tryouts will follow a more traditional tryout plan.   The gym will be closed during tryouts.  Only players, managers and staff will be allowed entry. Teams will be limited to 10-15 players.

Selection Criteria

The following criteria will be used during player evaluation and team selection process:

  • Academic Status
  • Skill Level (Ball Handling, Scoring, Defense, Rebounding, Athleticism)
  • Strength and Conditioning
  • Team Work
  • Attitude and Conduct

As with every competitive tryout, there will be cuts.  No player likes to be cut, and no coach likes to cut players.  However, it must be done when there are a limited number of roster spots.  During cuts, a coach will explain to you what you did well, what you need to work on and whether or not you made the team. There are plenty of other opportunities within the Herndon High School Athletic Department that student/athletes can compete.  If you have any questions, please email me.

Thank You,
